Podi Kizhi, a traditional Ayurvedic therapy, involves the application of medicated powders through a therapeutic massage technique. In this rejuvenating treatment, herbal powders are bundled into boluses, known as “Kizhi,” which are then heated and gently massaged over the body.
The process begins with the selection of specific herbal powders tailored to the individual’s unique constitution and health needs. These powders are then mixed with medicated oils or ghee to enhance their therapeutic properties
Preparation: The process begins with the selection of specific herbal powders based on the individual’s constitution and health needs. These powders are typically a combination of various medicinal herbs known for their healing properties.
Bolus Preparation: The selected herbal powders are then bundled into small muslin bags or boluses, known as “Kizhi.” These boluses are usually tied securely to ensure that the herbal powder does not spill out during the massage.
Heating: The Kizhi bundles are heated in medicated oils or ghee to enhance their therapeutic properties and ensure that they provide a soothing warmth during the massage. The heating process is usually carried out using a specialized Ayurvedic pot or a heat source.
Massage Technique: Once the Kizhi bundles are heated to the desired temperature, the therapist begins the massage by gently pressing and massaging them over specific parts of the body. The massage technique typically involves long strokes, circular motions, and gentle kneading to ensure that the herbal powders penetrate deep into the tissues.
Focus Areas: The therapist may focus on particular areas of tension, stiffness, or discomfort, depending on the individual’s needs. Common areas for Podi Kizhi treatment include the back, shoulders, neck, joints, and muscles affected by pain or inflammation.
Rhythmic Movements: Throughout the massage, the therapist maintains a rhythmic and consistent pressure to promote relaxation and enhance the flow of vital energy (prana) throughout the body. The soothing warmth of the heated Kizhi bundles also helps to open up the pores, allowing the herbal compounds to penetrate deeply into the skin and tissues.
Duration: The duration of Podi Kizhi treatment can vary depending on the individual’s condition and the therapist’s recommendations. Typically, sessions last between 30 to 60 minutes.
Post-Treatment: After the massage, it’s advisable to rest for a short period to allow the body to absorb the herbal benefits fully. The therapist may also provide post-treatment instructions, such as avoiding exposure to cold drafts or taking a warm shower to prolong the effects of the massage
