Tarpanam is an Ayurvedic treatment that focuses on rejuvenating and nourishing the eyes. It involves the application of medicated ghee or herbal pastes around the eyes in a specially constructed dam-like structure made of black gram dough. The treatment aims to improve eye health, alleviate eye strain, and address various eye-related issues such as dryness, irritation, and inflammation.
During Tarpanam, the eyes are gently bathed in the medicated ghee or herbal paste, which is allowed to remain in place for a certain duration. The treatment may also include gentle massage techniques around the eyes to enhance absorption and promote relaxation. Tarpanam is often performed as part of Panchakarma, an Ayurvedic detoxification and rejuvenation therapy, or as a standalone treatment for eye care and wellness.
Preparation: The recipient is comfortably positioned on a treatment table or chair, ensuring relaxation throughout the session. The room is often dimly lit to create a soothing ambiance conducive to relaxation.
Selection of Ingredients: The session begins with the preparation of specific ingredients used in Tharpanam, such as medicated ghee or herbal pastes. These ingredients are chosen based on the individual’s dosha (body constitution) and specific eye-related concerns.
Preparation of Dam-like Structure: A dam-like structure is created around the eyes using black gram dough or other suitable materials. This structure is designed to hold the medicated ghee or herbal paste in place during the treatment.
Application of Medication: The medicated ghee or herbal paste is gently applied around the eyes within the dam-like structure. The application is done with care to ensure that the medication does not come into direct contact with the eyes.
Duration of Treatment: Once the medication is applied, the recipient is encouraged to relax and keep their eyes closed for a specific duration, typically ranging from a few minutes to half an hour. During this time, the medication works to nourish and rejuvenate the eyes.
Massage Techniques: In some cases, gentle massage techniques may be applied around the eyes to enhance absorption and promote relaxation. The therapist may use circular motions or light tapping to stimulate circulation and improve the effectiveness of the treatment.
Removal of Medication: After the prescribed duration, the medicated ghee or herbal paste is carefully removed from around the eyes. Any residue is gently wiped away using a clean, soft cloth or cotton pads.
Post-Treatment Care: Following Tharpanam, the recipient may be advised to rest their eyes and avoid exposure to bright lights or screens for a short period. It’s also essential to follow any additional post-treatment instructions provided by the therapist to optimize the benefits of the treatment
